Improving the internet since 2006

Initially, OpenDNS provided a recursive DNS service for use at home, and in 2009 introduced a service for the enterprise market. In 2012, OpenDNS launched an enterprise security product, called Umbrella. Its rapid success and customer adoption led to OpenDNS being acquired by Cisco in 2015.

Today, our OpenDNS-branded products are designed to provide consumers with safer, faster, and more reliable internet in their homes. Our enterprise security product, is now branded Cisco Umbrella. To learn more about Cisco Umbrella, visit

David Ulevitch, one of BusinessWeek Magazine’s “Most Promising Entrepreneurs Under 30,” grew up in Del Mar, California and began his Internet career early in life. Before entering high school, he worked for ElectriCiti, a small regional ISP where he picked up his first tastes of system and network administration.

Together with experienced advisors and investors, Ulevitch created OpenDNS with the mission of being a business which succeeds by making the internet a better place. OpenDNS became the world’s largest and fastest-growing DNS service provider. In 2015, Ulevitch joined Cisco through the acquisition of OpenDNS. At Cisco, he was in charge of the company's global security strategy, portfolio and architecture.
