Cloches were first designed in 1908, but gained popularity in the 1920s when Coco Chanel solidified their place in flapper fashion. This iconic hat is named for the French word for "bell" because of its subtle, bell-shaped silhouette. Cloches for women are worn low on the head to frame the face, creating a very feminine look.
